More than an archipelago
Guna Yala is an Indigenous comarca with its own communities, authorities and rules. Its sandy islands, reefs and navigation belong to a living culture, not to a tourism backdrop separated from its people.
The experience improves when visitors arrive with a responsible operator, ask before taking photographs and recognize that each community may organize access differently.
Preparing for a visit
- Confirm transport, accommodation and sea conditions.
- Carry identification, small cash bills and simple luggage.
- Do not use drones or photograph people without permission.
- Buy crafts directly from their makers when possible.
Visiting is not acquiring land
Comarca land follows a collective regime and should not be presented as ordinary private property. A company, foundation or private agreement does not by itself turn comarca land into freely transferable real estate.
If someone offers an island or parcel, stop before paying and identify the applicable regime and authority.
